Traditionally, the Bride would stand on the left because that is the side closest to the grooms’ heart. In feudal times the right arm was the sword arm of a fighting man.

To protect his bride he would hold her with his left hand and fight off attackers with his right arm.

The word ‘Bride’ was originally the term for ‘Cook’

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a silver sixpence for your shoe.’

A Victorian tradition where- ‘Something old ‘refers to the brides’ family and her old life.

- ‘Something new’ to future good fortune and success, usually given to the bride from the groom.

- ‘ Something Borrowed’ had to be from a happily married woman to bring good luck to future brides’ own marriage.

- ‘Something Blue’ Blue represents purity, modesty and fidelity.

- ‘Silver sixpence for your shoe’ A sixpence was placed in the brides’ left shoe as a symbol of wealth, not only financially but happiness and joy throughout her married life.

The engagement ring served as a partial payment for the bride, also seen as the branding the bride as taken or claimed property.

The wedding and engagement ring are worn on the third finger of the left hand-is an ancient Egyptian belief that the “vein of love” runs between the ring finger and the heart, although science has debunked this belief it is still tradition to do this.
